Mayan Curse -- Community Newsletter Issue 19

Published 6 months ago • 2 min read

Hey Reader!

David Kessler here.

Coming in hot, from one of our illustrious Protospiel Online moderators, Joe Slack, is a new game that he and his team just launched on Kickstarter.

Slide into adventure with Mayan Curse!

Mayan Curse is a 1-6 player adventure game where you slide stone slabs and match up your sacred stones (with Mayan symbols) to make your path to the temple, collecting as much knowledge as you can along the way. But not only do you have to contend with other explorers for that crucial knowledge, you may also accidentally trigger a trap that will send boulders tumbling toward the entrance. Once all the boulders get there, the entrance is sealed and there's no way out...

You'll have to judge when to turn back and when it's still safe to continue on, amassing more knowledge. Maybe you can even reach the top of the temple to take a picture of the ancient lost city. But get too greedy and you could be trapped forever!

Joe Slack has attended every single Protospiel Online since the inception and has been a moderator since the second event. He's playtested so many games with other amazing designers and made some lifelong friendships. He's very excited to share this game with those he's met and have gotten to know him for his puzzle-y games.

Joe is also one of the organizers of Protospiel North in Toronto and playtested Mayan Curse multiple times at that event.

Take the survey here. The promotion is valid until November 14th--so don't wait! I know Neftaly would appreciate the help!

Break My Game--a wonderful game testing community--is hosting a couple virtual events in the near future:

  • An AMA Panda Workshop On November 1st at 4pm EST. Jay Bell and other Pandas will be answering your questions related to game design for manufacturing, manufacturing itself, and more!
  • AND, Break My Game's Fall 2023 Game Jam is starting on November 3rd. You can register for the event here!

Hey Reader! Heather Newton here. When Protospiel Online attendees playtest with me and find out I'm the main person organizing the event, they sometimes ask me what prototypes I brought to test for the weekend. My response is that they've been playtesting my game the whole time they've been engaging with the convention. I suspect plenty of people think I'm kidding when I say this. While I might say it with a bit of a chuckle, I do mean what I say. This session, I made the prototype listing...

Ironwood: A Protospiel Success Story

Hey Reader! Emily Vincent here. Our Protospiel Community is incredibly inspiring and we love to celebrate each others' wins! Today is one of those stories, of playtesting that led to dreams coming true. Ironwood In 2022, at the summer Protospiel Online, Maël Brunet and Julien Chaput playtested their game "Black Flag." A few months later, after pitching it all around, they received 3 offers to sign the game! Mindclash Games was more than they could dream of and after one year of very dedicated...
